Connecting the Kit<\/h2>\n<p>The standard ShapeOkO2 electronics are the <a href=\"http:\/\/arduino.cc\/en\/Main\/arduinoBoardUno\">Arduino Uno<\/a> and the <a href=\"http:\/\/arduino.cc\/en\/Main\/arduinoBoardUno\">GShield<\/a>.\u00a0 If you bought from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.inventables.com\/technologies\/desktop-cnc-mill-kit-shapeoko-2\">Inventables<\/a> and got the entire kit, you got an original Arduino Uno.\u00a0 If you bought the electronics from <a href=\"https:\/\/synthetos.myshopify.com\/products\/gshield-v4-shapeoko-bundle\">Synthetos<\/a> then you will have a different Arduino board.\u00a0 No matter, the connection is the same either way!<\/p>\n<p>The Shapeoko uses the popular open source machine control <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/grbl\/grbl\">firmware GRBL<\/a>\u00a0for its operation. \u00a0They now have different versions which require you to hook up the laser differently. \u00a0We will cover both versions here.<\/p>\n<h4>GRBL Version 0.8 and lower (Shapeoko 1 and older 2&#8217;s)<\/h4>\n<p>If you bought your Shapeoko before January 2015 and have not upgraded your firmware then you probably have GRBL 0.8 on your machine. \u00a0The connection is pretty easy.\u00a0 You can either connect to the GShield on the top or to the bottom with the Arduino.\u00a0 Soldering a wire into one of the holes is the easiest way to get going.\u00a0 Or you can solder a piece of a standard <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sparkfun.com\/products\/116\">break away header<\/a> and use a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sparkfun.com\/products\/8672\">jumper wire cable<\/a>.\u00a0 Either way you are going to need to connect the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Pin 12 Labeled &#8220;12&#8221; Controlling the Laser<\/h2>\n<p>Now that you got everything ready with the wiring, now it is time to turn on the laser with GCode!<\/p>\n<p>The GRBL firmware supports a feature to turn on a spindle and turn it off.\u00a0 Typically, most of the spindles are Dremel type ones with no external trigger and require a manual turn on, so this pin probably is not used.\u00a0 Even if it is, there are numerous connection points so the two can share (but make sure to turn off the spindle power before you run!).<\/p>\n<p>So,\u00a0 what are the commands?\u00a0 The standard command to turn on the spindle is M3 and to turn it off is M5.\u00a0\u00a0 So, to turn on and off the laser it is:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>M3 \u00a0&#8211; Turn Laser On<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>M5 \u00a0&#8211; Turn Laser OFF<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you want to use PWM for power control (and have GRBL version 0.9 or higher installed) then the commands are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>M03 SXXXXX<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Where the \u201cXXXXX\u201d is a number between 0 and 10000. \u00a0So, some examples are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Laser ON 100%: \u00a0M03 S12000<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Laser ON 50%: \u00a0M03 S6000<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Laser ON 10%: \u00a0M03 S1200<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Laser OFF: \u00a0M03 S0 (or M05 will work as well\u2026)<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you are using the J Tech GRBL version, then the command will be:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>M03 SXXX<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Where the \u201cXXX\u201d is a number between 0 and 255. \u00a0So, some examples are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Laser ON 100%: \u00a0M03 S255<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Laser ON 50%: \u00a0M03 S127<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Laser ON 10%: \u00a0M03 S25<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Laser OFF: \u00a0M03 S0 (or M05 will work as well\u2026)<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/jtechphotonics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Laser-Commands-Shapeoko2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1401\" src=\"https:\/\/jtechphotonics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Laser-Commands-Shapeoko2.jpg\" alt=\"Laser Commands Shapeoko2\" width=\"548\" height=\"313\" srcset=\"https:\/\/jtechphotonics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Laser-Commands-Shapeoko2.jpg 548w, https:\/\/jtechphotonics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Laser-Commands-Shapeoko2-300x171.jpg 300w, https:\/\/jtechphotonics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Laser-Commands-Shapeoko2-36x20.jpg 36w, https:\/\/jtechphotonics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Laser-Commands-Shapeoko2-150x85.jpg 150w, https:\/\/jtechphotonics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Laser-Commands-Shapeoko2-32x18.jpg 32w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 548px) 100vw, 548px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><a href=\"https:\/\/jtechphotonics.com\/?p=6946\">Set-up for Photo Engraving<\/a><\/h2>\n<p>The firmware that comes with your machine will not be able to do very good picture engraving if you don&#8217;t have version 1.1f or newer on your controller. \u00a0It stops for EVERY pixel to adjust the intensity. \u00a0Now, this might work if you turn your laser power on your driver really low and you are willing to wait hours for your engraving to finish but I think you might have better things to do with your time. \u00a0This is why the new firmware was developed so the intensity of the laser can change without stopping for every pixel. \u00a0So, in order to set up your X carve for photo engraving you will need to follow a few steps. \u00a0Here is the blog post on how to set up your machine:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"XYbYpAq0p6\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/jtechphotonics.com\/?p=6946\">Picture Engraving with GRBL Machines<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; on the machine. \u00a0Instead of the spindle, you now have a laser. \u00a0It is exactly the same way to control it, but now you are drawing in 2D and not 3D. \u00a0The ShapeOko website has a good tutorial on how to make 2D drawings with several programs, then send them to a toolpath generator and process it. \u00a0Here is the link on how they say to complete this workflow:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.shapeoko.com\/wiki\/index.php\/Basic_workflow_2D\">http:\/\/www.shapeoko.com\/wiki\/index.php\/Basic_workflow_2D<\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Running Your ShapeOko 2 Laser<\/h2>\n<p>Running your new laser upgraded system will be exactly like when you were running it with a spindle on it. \u00a0Just make sure you have all of your safety gear in place, the laser focused, power set, and everything powered on and ready to go. \u00a0Here is the link to running your machine on the ShapeOko website. \u00a0Instead of using a spindle, just replace all of it with a laser. \u00a0We set our focus for the laser at about 3&#8243;
