{"id":3819,"date":"2016-01-21T16:48:41","date_gmt":"2016-01-21T21:48:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/jtechphotonics.com\/?page_id=3819"},"modified":"2023-06-05T08:31:50","modified_gmt":"2023-06-05T14:31:50","slug":"mostly-printed-cnc-upgrade","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/jtechphotonics.com\/?page_id=3819","title":{"rendered":"Mostly Printed CNC Upgrade"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/jtechphotonics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/MPCNC-small.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-3821 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/jtechphotonics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/MPCNC-small-300x152.jpg\" alt=\"MPCNC small\" width=\"300\" height=\"152\" \/><\/a>\u00a0Ryan Zellars came up with a pretty cool design for a CNC that runs on conduit to win a design contest. \u00a0Well, he won. \u00a0The reason was because it is a pretty cool idea on how to make a very inexpensive multi purpose CNC platform. \u00a0All you really need for this is some conduit, bearings, nuts\/bolts\/screws, and 3D printed parts. \u00a0Mostly 3D printed parts&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>The main website for the machine is located here: \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vicious1.com\">www.vicious1.com<br \/>Y<\/a>ou can find out details on the BOM, how to assemble it, and there is a nice forum of users.<\/p>\n<p>He also put everything on Thingiverse for everyone to share. \u00a0It is here:\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.thingiverse.com\/thing:724999\">www.thingiverse.com\/thing:724999<\/a><\/p>\n<p>So there are several people who have upgraded their mostly printed CNC&#8217;s so far, so we thought we would put up some of the instructions based off of their designs here. The mechanical parts are all the same, but the controller is chosen by you. \u00a0We will lay it all out here on this page on how to get started.<\/p>\n<h2>Mechanical<\/h2>\n<p>There have been a few people who have put up some mounting techniques for the laser.\u00a0 For the newest 7W laser Jeff Green has made a great mount here on Thingiverse that works with our <a href=\"https:\/\/jtechphotonics.com\/?product=generic-all-in-one-laser-and-mounting-kit-bundle\">generic magnetic mounting bundle<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thingiverse.com\/thing:4018010\">https:\/\/www.thingiverse.com\/thing:4018010<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thingiverse.com\/thing:4018010\" target=\"_blank\" \u00a0It includes two line lasers in it for making a cross to exactly show where the cutting\/engraving beam will be. \u00a0Super cool!<\/p>\n<p><a have a choice on what you want to do for your electronics on this machine. \u00a0Ryan suggests using the RAMPS 1.4 controller with the Arduino MEGA and the MARLIN firmware. \u00a0It is a pretty easy and well established solution. \u00a0 \u00a0You can also choose to use the Arduino UNO and the G Sheild, which we explain on the <a title=\"Shapeoko 2 CNC Upgrade\" href=\"https:\/\/jtechphotonics.com\/?page_id=1100\">Shapeoko<\/a> and <a title=\"X-Carve Upgrade\" href=\"https:\/\/jtechphotonics.com\/?page_id=3565\">X carve<\/a> pages. \u00a0We will cover the RAMPS 1.4 here.<\/p>\n<p>We already have <a title=\"RepRap \u2013 RAMPS1.4 Upgrade\" href=\"https:\/\/jtechphotonics.com\/?page_id=1503\">instructions located here for the RAMPS board<\/a>, but we will overview it here. \u00a0The laser driver input will need to be connected to the fan output on the RAMPS board. \u00a0It is on connector D9. \u00a0Here is the electrical diagram for the connections based on a 3D printer. \u00a0You can ignore all of the extruder and heatbed stuff, just look at the Fan output:<\/p>\n<p><a \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Simply connect the \u201c+\u201d wire from terminal D9 to the \u201c+\u201d input of H2 on the laser driver board. \u00a0Then, connect the \u201c-\u201d wire from terminal D9 to the \u201c-\u201d input of H2 on the laser driver board.<\/p>\n<p>If you use the<a title=\"Molex Mini Fit Jr. Jumper 2 Wire Connector\" href=\"https:\/\/jtechphotonics.com\/?product=molex-mini-fit-jr-jumper-2-wire-connector\"> Molex Mini fit jr. cable<\/a>\u00a0then connect the black wire to the D9 &#8220;-&#8221; terminal and the red wire to the D9 &#8220;+&#8221; terminal. \u00a0This cable connects to the H4 Terminal of the driver board.<\/p>\n<h2>Software<\/h2>\n<p>The commands to turn on and off the laser in G Code are:<\/p>\n<p>LASER ON: \u00a0 \u00a0M106<br \/>LASER OFF: \u00a0M107<\/p>\n<h4>Using PWM to control the laser<\/h4>\n<p>You can have power control as well with the RAMPS1.4 board. \u00a0Simply use \u201cM106 Sxxx\u201d command to turn on the laser where \u201cxxx\u201d is a number between 0 and 255. \u00a0255 is full power and 0 is off.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>M106 S255 = Turns the laser on at full power<\/li>\n<li>M106 S0 = Turns the laser off<\/li>\n<li>M106 S127 = Turns the laser on at 50% power<\/li>\n<li>M107 = Turns the laser off as well<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Issues with Marlin Firmware V2<\/h3>\n<p>If you have issues with doing fills and rastor images, then you might need to modify your firmware to include this.\u00a0 Jeff Green was nice enough to figure out this issue and share with everyone how to do it.\u00a0 You basically need to comment out the delay from the planner to allow for rastor moves to happen unimpeded.<\/p>\n<p><b>in the\u00a0<span class=\"il\">Marlin<\/span>.cpp file.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">\/\/ Limit check_axes_activity frequency to 10Hz<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">static the Machine<\/h3>\n<p>First make sure you download the Arduino software to make sure you have the drivers installed before you plug in your board. \u00a0Download it here: \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.arduino.cc\/en\/Main\/Software\">www.arduino.cc\/en\/Main\/Software<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Many people use <a href=\"http:\/\/repetier.com\">Repetier Host<\/a> for controlling the machine. \u00a0Some settings can be found here: \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vicious1.com\/repetier-host\/\">www.vicious1.com\/repetier-host\/<\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Using Your Machine<\/h2>\n<p>There are several ways
