It will depend on what software you might already have and if you want to purchase any new software or not.&nbsp; We&nbsp;<strong>HIGHLY&nbsp;Recommend<\/strong>&nbsp;getting the Lightburn software package as it will run the entire process and make it the easiest to use your machine.&nbsp; We will be doing all of the rest of the instructions with this software.&nbsp; However, since this machine is based on an open source controller architecture, there are a lot of choices out there.&nbsp; We cover Lightburn in detail here.<\/p>\n<h4>All in One Software Package:<\/h4>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Lightburn Software<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013&nbsp;<strong>*recommended*&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/strong>This is an \u201call in one\u201d software package that you can do vector art, import SVG files, engrave images, and run the machine all in one place.&nbsp; Shapeoko3<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/jtechphotonics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Shapeoko3-300x151.jpg\" alt=\"Shapeoko3\"><\/h2>\n<p>Ok, now that you have downloaded Lightburn software, we can get started with the rest of the setup.&nbsp; &nbsp; When you install the Lightburn software, you might see Windows trying to protect you.&nbsp; Click on the bottom \u201cRun Anyway\u201d button to install it.&nbsp; The Shapeoko3 has some things you need to change to get it all working, so we will cover it here.<\/p>\n<p>When you first run Lightburn, you should have a quick setup wizard walk you through the setup.&nbsp; You will not be able to do pictures though).<\/p>\n<p><strong>2. Check your GRBL Firmware Version<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Lightburn works best with the newest version 1.1f (or higher) with dynamic laser mode enabled.&nbsp; &nbsp;When lightburn connects to your machine, you will see in the console your version you are on.&nbsp; If it does not say &#8220;Grbl 1.1f&#8221; (or higher version) then you have the wrong version.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/jtechphotonics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/5-Check-for-GRBL-version.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-17511\" src=\"https:\/\/jtechphotonics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/5-Check-for-GRBL-version.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1080\" srcset=\"https:\/\/jtechphotonics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/5-Check-for-GRBL-version.jpg 1920w, https:\/\/jtechphotonics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/5-Check-for-GRBL-version-600x338.jpg 600w, https:\/\/jtechphotonics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/5-Check-for-GRBL-version-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/jtechphotonics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/5-Check-for-GRBL-version-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/jtechphotonics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/5-Check-for-GRBL-version-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/jtechphotonics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/5-Check-for-GRBL-version-1536x864.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/jtechphotonics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/5-Check-for-GRBL-version-150x84.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1920px) 100vw, 1920px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>If you have Grbl 1.1f (or higher), then go to the next step.&nbsp; <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If not, then you need to update your firmware.&nbsp; Close down lightburn and start the process.&nbsp; Here is how:<\/p>\n<p>Click here to use the Carbide Updater program:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.carbide3d.com\/support\/carbideupdater\/\">CARBIDE GRBL UPDATER PROGRAM<\/a><\/p>\n<p>-or- use this process.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Download GRBL 1.1F Firmware<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Download and extract:&nbsp;&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/jtechphotonics.com\/Downloads\/GRBL1_1\/GRBL_1_1f.zip\">1.1f ( Main Branch Merge \u2013 NEW)<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>If you want to check and see if there is an even newer version, then go to the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/gnea\/grbl\/releases\">main GRBL page here in the release section<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Now that you have your firmware downloaded and have extracted the .hex file, we will walk through the rest of the process.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Load Your Firmware<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>For MAC: <a href=\"http:\/\/jtechphotonics.com\/Downloads\/HexUploader.zip\">Download Hex Uploader<\/a><\/p>\n<p>For PC:&nbsp; X loader is a cool program that makes it easy to load new firmware to your controller. &nbsp;You can download it here:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/jtechphotonics.com\/\/Downloads\/XLoader.zip\">Download X Loader<\/a><\/p>\n<p>After you download the file, extract it and run the application. &nbsp;You should see a dialog box like the following:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6951\" src=\"https:\/\/jtechphotonics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/2-X-Loader.jpg\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 204px) 100vw, 204px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/jtechphotonics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/2-X-Loader.jpg 204w, https:\/\/jtechphotonics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/2-X-Loader-150x154.jpg 150w\" alt=\"2 X Loader\" width=\"204\" height=\"209\"><\/p>\n<p>Browse for the GRBL \u201c.hex\u201d file. &nbsp;Choose \u201cUno (ATmega328) in the Device drop down. &nbsp;Select your COM port and put the Baud Rate at 115200.<br \/>\nCan\u2019t figure out your COM port for your machine? &nbsp;Here are some videos to help:<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=VGW2dCGNBD0\">Finding COM Ports in Windows 10<\/a><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=LYSonSxm7KQ\">Finding COM Ports in Windows 7<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Hold down the Z limit switch and press the \u201cUpload\u201d button. &nbsp;It should say \u201cuploading\u201d for no more than a minute and then it will say \u201ccompleted\u201d and the size of the file uploaded. &nbsp;If it runs forever, you have either the wrong device chosen, the wrong COM port, or the wrong Baud Rate.<\/p>\n<p>You now have the new version of firmware on your machine.&nbsp; Start lightburn up again and go to the next step.<\/p>\n<p><strong>8. These two options combined with variations in power and speed can achieve a variety of results.<\/p>\n<p>Settings will vary from machine to machine and across different materials. It is recommended to test your settings on a scrap piece of the same material as your final work piece before your final run.<\/p>\n<p>To the right of the cut window you will see 4 arrows. The up and down arrows allow you to change the order of the highlighted cut or scan layer, and the right and left arrows allow you to copy cut or scan settings into the cache, and write those cached settings into a cut or scan layer.
