Fine gradients, subtle transitions, and consistent dot placement all need to come together to produce a clean, realistic result. There\u2019s also a long-standing bit of \u201cshop lore\u201d that claims <strong>higher-power diode lasers sacrifice detail due to larger spot sizes<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We decided to test that claim directly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In this article, we\u2019ll first walk through <strong>what actually matters for diode laser photo engraving<\/strong>, then share the results of a <strong>controlled engraving runoff test<\/strong> using four different J Tech diode lasers \u2014 from 7W all the way up to 64W PRO.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-makes-a-good-diode-laser-photo-engraving\">What Makes a Good Diode Laser Photo Engraving?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Photo engraving is not about brute force \u2014 it\u2019s about <strong>control<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Key factors that affect photo engraving quality include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-1-spot-size-amp-beam-quality\">1. Spot Size &amp; Beam Quality<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Detail resolution is governed primarily by:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Optical design<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Beam shaping<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Focus accuracy<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Power alone does <strong>not<\/strong> determine spot size. In some cases, we had to physically raise the laser module to compensate \u2014 especially on the 7W+.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Focus heights used:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>7W+<\/strong>: 0.125&#8243;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>14W+, 34W PRO, 64W PRO<\/strong>: 0.25&#8243;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In reality, focus shifted slightly during engraving due to material unevenness. Despite this, <strong>all four engravings still produced excellent photo results<\/strong>, which is a strong indicator of optical consistency across the lineup.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Equivalent fine detail across all four lasers<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Clean dithering and dot placement at every power level<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>No noticeable loss of resolution on the 34W PRO or 64W PRO<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Minor darkness differences attributable to power tuning \u2014 not optics<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Any small variations observed were overwhelmingly due to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Wood grain direction<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Glue layers in the plywood<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Localized focus variation from warp<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With additional tuning time, we could have matched darkness nearly perfectly across all samples.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure
