{"id":473,"date":"2013-03-12T20:03:42","date_gmt":"2013-03-12T20:03:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/jtechphotonics.com\/?p=473"},"modified":"2018-06-27T17:29:40","modified_gmt":"2018-06-27T22:29:40","slug":"laser-cutting-solder-stencils-using-the-j-tech-photonics-laser-upgrade-to-the-makerbot-3d-printer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jtechphotonics.com\/?p=473","title":{"rendered":"Laser cutting solder stencils using the J Tech Photonics laser upgrade to the Makerbot 3D printer"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In the new era of &#8220;personalized manufacturing&#8221; the ability to create fast prototypes and small run production is a must for companies, entrepreneurs,\u00a0 and hobbyists alike.\u00a0 In this article you will find detailed instructions on how to create a solder stencil for surface mount technology parts.<\/p>\n<p>First you will need to have the output from your circuit design tool available for the paste layer.\u00a0 We will then need to shrink the pads and holes by about 2 mills to allow for the spot size of the laser beam on the stencil material when processing.\u00a0 Then the output is saved to PDF where it can be imported into the path generating software.\u00a0 Then, with a simple change of some G codes, the file is ready for Replicator G and laser processing.<\/p>\n<h4>Equipment:<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>A Makerbot or other 3D printer or CNC machine with the <a href=\"https:\/\/jtechphotonics.com\/?product=1-7w-445nm-laser-diode-and-2-0-amp-adjustable-driver-kit\">J Tech Photonics laser upgrade kit<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Thin plastic transparency sheet for overhead projectors.<\/li>\n<li>A couple of pieces of paper to put under the plastic.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>Software:<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Pdf creator for printing pdf files:\u00a0\u00a0 http:\/\/sourceforge.net\/projects\/pdfcreator\/files\/<\/li>\n<li><a title=\"http:\/\/www.pentalogix.com\/Download\/download.html\" href=\"http:\/\/www.pentalogix.com\/Download\/download.html\">Pentalogix ViewMate Gerber viewer software<\/a> for viewing gerber files.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/inkscape.org\/download\/?lang=en\">Inkscape<\/a> (or other software) to create G Code files from pdf drawings.<\/li>\n<li>Laser engraver extension &#8211; This generates the g-code needed to control the laser. Find it here:\u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/jtechphotonics.com\/?page_id=1980\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Inkscape Laser Plugin\u00a0<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>Instructions:<\/h4>\n<p>1. From your layout program generate the output file for the &#8220;paste&#8221; layer.<\/p>\n<p>2.
