{"id":5191,"date":"2016-08-25T13:57:06","date_gmt":"2016-08-25T18:57:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/jtechphotonics.com\/?p=5191"},"modified":"2020-06-30T14:49:55","modified_gmt":"2020-06-30T20:49:55","slug":"5-amp-dual-driver-setup","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jtechphotonics.com\/?p=5191","title":{"rendered":"5 Amp Dual Laser Driver Setup"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We have had a lot of questions on if our drivers can be put in parallel to allow more current. \u00a0The short answer is YES!<\/p>\n<p>The unique design of the J Tech driver is built around parallel linear regulators all sharing the output load. \u00a0Because of this, they can be paralleled with multiple boards as well. \u00a0We tested two drivers together in the lab just to show the possibilities of what can be achieved. \u00a0We suggest you set each driver to be equal to each other when setting the current. \u00a0For example, if you want 4 amps total then set both drivers to 2 amps (2 + 2 = 4). \u00a0If you want 5 amps total then set each to 2.5 amps (2.5 + 2.5 = 5).<\/p>\n<p>To set it up, simply connect the output screw terminal H1 of each driver together in parallel with a minimum of 22 AWG wire (we used 18 AWG in our tests). \u00a0Then put your laser on the output terminal H3 Molex Mini Fit Jr. connection on one of the drivers. \u00a0The laser will see the current from both of the drivers combined.<\/p>\n<p>To control the input you will need to splice your input signal to BOTH drivers so each one will get the input signal.<\/p>\n<p>If you want to connect more than two drivers together, then just make sure you parallel all of the drivers. \u00a0In theory, you can make a 100 amps combined driver!<\/p>\n<p>Here is the test showing the connection and the output current of 5 amps.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/jtechphotonics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/J-Tech-Laser-Drivers-5-Amps.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-5192\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-5192 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/jtechphotonics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/J-Tech-Laser-Drivers-5-Amps.jpg\" alt=\"Someone demonstrating 5 amp dual laser driver setup\" width=\"940\" height=\"588\" srcset=\"https:\/\/jtechphotonics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/J-Tech-Laser-Drivers-5-Amps.jpg 940w, https:\/\/jtechphotonics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/J-Tech-Laser-Drivers-5-Amps-600x375.jpg 600w, https:\/\/jtechphotonics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/J-Tech-Laser-Drivers-5-Amps-300x188.jpg 300w, https:\/\/jtechphotonics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/J-Tech-Laser-Drivers-5-Amps-768x480.jpg 768w, https:\/\/jtechphotonics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/J-Tech-Laser-Drivers-5-Amps-150x94.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 940px) 100vw, 940px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Using the dual driver setup on an X Carve &#8211; Example<\/h3>\n<p>The 3.8W laser we are shipping actually can go a bunch higher in power, but the driver maxes out at 2.5amps.\u00a0 Overdriving the laser will reduce the lifetime, however in some cases this doesn&#8217;t matter when production time is critical or if you can cut something you couldn&#8217;t at lower power.\u00a0 Here is an example of using the dual drivers to push a 3.8W up to 6W on the x carve.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/jtechphotonics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/New-X-Carve-J-Tech-Laser-Wiring-Diagram-dual-driver.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-9122 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/jtechphotonics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/New-X-Carve-J-Tech-Laser-Wiring-Diagram-dual-driver.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1280\" height=\"720\" srcset=\"https:\/\/jtechphotonics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/New-X-Carve-J-Tech-Laser-Wiring-Diagram-dual-driver.jpg 1280w, https:\/\/jtechphotonics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/New-X-Carve-J-Tech-Laser-Wiring-Diagram-dual-driver-600x338.jpg 600w, https:\/\/jtechphotonics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/New-X-Carve-J-Tech-Laser-Wiring-Diagram-dual-driver-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/jtechphotonics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/New-X-Carve-J-Tech-Laser-Wiring-Diagram-dual-driver-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/jtechphotonics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/New-X-Carve-J-Tech-Laser-Wiring-Diagram-dual-driver-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/jtechphotonics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/New-X-Carve-J-Tech-Laser-Wiring-Diagram-dual-driver-150x84.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1280px) 100vw, 1280px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We recommend setting balancing the two drivers and only increasing the current to a point where your application has enough extra power to continue.<\/p>\n<p>As always, contact us if you have questions setting this up.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We have had a lot of questions on if our drivers can be put in parallel to allow more current. \u00a0The short answer is YES!
